Assistant Professor or Instructor of Literature

This position offers either a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor appointment or a full-time, incentives-based, annually renewable, three-year Instructor appointment. Type of appointment is negotiable with candidate.

 

The position requires expertise in one or more areas of the Global South (e.g., Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, the South Pacific), including interest in diaspora literature. The successful candidate will teach surveys and topics classes that include canonical works in British literature set against the Anglophone literatures produced by individuals from the Global South.

 

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic and inspiring teacher. Moreover, this candidate will be a dynamic colleague capable of teamwork and team-teaching. This is a collaborative position, and the successful candidate will contribute to the department’s Foundations in Language & Literary Studies course. A commitment to community engagement and high impact activities will be an advantage. Based in Emporia, Kansas.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching Duties:

The position requires the teaching of four courses per semester or equivalent and course development in the above-mentioned areas; this position contributes to the programs for English Language Arts teachers & Languages, Literary Studies, and Writing students. The successful candidate will be an experienced teacher who will adapt to the literacy needs of first-generation students. Experience with pedagogy-focused curricular design and assessment is especially valuable.

 

Service Duties:

The position requires both departmental and university wide service, including initiatives in recruitment and retention and engagement with students in Recognized Student Organizations and other student activities.

 

Some of the student retention activities in the School of Humanities & Social Sciences may include:

 

●      Participating in outreach and recruitment for English and Literary Studies programs 

●      Collaborating with colleagues for planning and student retention strategies 

●      Participating in systematic review and evaluation of student retention

●      Serving on committees as appropriate and performing other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

This individual should be student-focused, goal-oriented, organized, and willing to collaborate with colleagues in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the University. Qualified applicants will have:

  • PhD in English, Comparative Literature, or other appropriate discipline (Master’s level or ABD applicants considered)
  • Demonstrated experience with college level teaching, including online, hybrid, and team-teaching



  • Bilingual Spanish/English candidates are preferred, but all candidates considered.
