Department of Residential Life at Emporia State University is seeking applicants for the Assistant Director (AD) positition. The Department of Residential Life strives to support the academic mission of Emporia State University by providing residents with assistance, connections, and opportunities to enhance their experience at ESU.


The department is committed to the celebration of diversity, community safety, and student development. As a member of the Residential Life Team at Emporia State University, the AD will promote and activate the mission, vision, and values of the department. Reporting to the Director of Residential Life, the AD plays an integral leadership role in the operations of residence hall communities and the overall experience of residents.


Ideal candidates should be student-focused and have the ability to provide vision, effectively planning, implement training and accountability, communicate effectively, and oversee operations with excellent attention to detail. The AD may assume Director responsibilities in the absence of the Director. This is a 12-month, live-off position, and includes night and weekend responsibilities. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Departmental Leadership: Provide leadership, professionalism, and support for the Residential Life team. Work with the Residential Life team on departmental initiatives such as recruitment, retention, move-in, move-out, and summer conferences. Collaborate with external stakeholders on behalf of Residential Life. (10%)
  • Residential Experience: Oversee all aspects of the residential curriculum which includes individualized and community support, social and educational experiences, and connections to campus, to optimize resident experiences and increase retention. (20%)
  • Supervision: Directly supervise and evaluate Complex Coordinators, indirectly supervise a Graduate Assistant, and indirectly supervise student staff ( Resident Assistants, Summer Assistants, and Reception Center Assistants). Assist Complex Coordinators with supervision of student staff, addressing student concerns, activation of the residential curriculum, building management, and other duties. (20%)
  • Crisis Response: Serve as a member of 24-hour duty rotation. Provide initial crisis management and resources for students as needed. May be called in 24 hours a day to address student behaviors, facilities malfunctions, medical crises and other concerns. Provide holistic training for staff to effectively implement emergency procedures. Regularly adapt and maintain policy and procedure documents. (10%)
  • Assessment: Coordinate all assessment efforts for the department. Coordinate access and project implementation through Baseline assessment software. Communicate assessment results with stakeholders. Train staff on assessment practices and guiding assessment use within the department. Identify and implement action steps based on assessment results. (5%)
  • Training: Plan and implement staff training events. Coordinate Resident Assistant, Reception Center Assistant, Summer Assistant, and Complex Coordinator initial and on-going training. Work with the Complex Coordinators on the on-going training for all staff positions. Oversee the planning and implementation for on-boarding processes and training for new employees. (15%)
  • Student Accountability and Support: Participate in and oversee processes for student accountability and support by reviewing incident reports, intentional conversations, and other reported information. This includes making wellness and academic referrals, upholding polices through the conduct process, completing informal check-ins, and addressing negative community behaviors. Uphold Title IX and Clery reporting guidelines and train Residential Life staff on related expectations and procedures. (10%)
  • Hiring: Coordinate the hiring process for student staff positions. (10%)

QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree in a related field.
  • Three years of progressive administrative and supervisory experience.
  • Prior eperience with student development theory, staff training, and crisis management.
  • Ability to create spaces and relationships that support diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to serve on a 24/7 on-call duty rotation and respond to campus within 10 minutes.
  • Capability to work a flexible schedule, including work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to perform each essential duty mentioned below satisfactorily.
  • Successful background check.

 

Qualifications Preferred:

  • Previous Residential Life, assessment, student conduct experience.
  • Experience with StarRez and Maxient.
  • Ability to prioritize and balance multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Experience with residence hall operations and management. 

COMPENSATION:

  • Salary: $53,000-$63,000 annually
  • Qualifications and previous experience will be considered for salary.
