Emporia State University recognizes faculty are the heart of our academic mission. The School of Science and Mathematics seeks an Assistant or Associate Dean who will play a pivotal role in championing faculty success; acknowledging that when faculty thrive, our students, our School, and the University flourish.
The Assistant/Associate Dean will serve as a key academic leader who partners with faculty, staff, and the Dean to cultivate an inspiring environment for teaching, scholarship, and service. This position centers on the belief that faculty excellence is central to the growth and impact of the academic programs in the School of Science and Mathematics.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support faculty recruitment by advising search committees and ensuring inclusive, effective hiring practices.
- Foster faculty development by coordinating onboarding, professional development, and mentoring programs that empower faculty across ranks and career stages
- Advance academic excellence by helping shape and communicate faculty expectations, strategic academic goals, and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration
- Lead faculty evaluation processes, including annual reviews and personnel recommendations, with fairness, consistency, and transparency.
- Communicate and implement policies, ensuring clarity and compliance across faculty-related matters
- Manage faculty workload and make recommendations regarding reassigned time, overloads, accommodations, and tenure-clock extensions to support faculty balance and productivity.
- Facilitate resolution of grievances and conflicts, creating a climate of respect and collaboration.
- Champion faculty achievements through awards, media relations, and recognition efforts that elevate the visibility and impact of faculty work
- Perform additional duties in service to the Dean and the School’s academic mission
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or other terminal degree
- Demonstrated experience managing faculty performance review across all faculty ranks and appointments.
- Deep knowledge of best practices in faculty development and mentoring
- Proven ability to foster the synergistic potential across diverse academic disciplines.
- Demonstrated ability to navigate conflict management, grievance processes, and working through difficult issues
- Exceptional communication and organizational skills.
Assistant Dean:
- A minimum of 2 years administrative experience at position of Department Chair, or higher, in higher education.
Associate Dean:
- At least 7 years of administrative experience in higher education, with a strong record of leadership in faculty success initiatives.
COMPENSATION:
- Salary: $90,000 – $108,000 annually
- Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
