The Psychology program at Emporia State University is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor for a 9-month position focusing on legal or forensic psychology.

 

The Psychology program at Emporia State University invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position, to begin August 2025.


We are seeking a legal or forensic psychologist to help us further our undergraduate Psychology and Law track for students interested in research and graduate study in psychology, criminology, and law.


We seek a colleague who is passionate about undergraduate teaching, research, and mentorship. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses in the candidate’s area(s) of expertise, mentoring undergraduate and graduate research, maintaining an active research program, and providing service at state, regional, and national levels.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teaching undergraduate courses in the candidate’s area(s) of expertise, including Legal Psychology, Forensic Psychology, and related topics (e.g., Investigative Psychology, Correctional Psychology, Wrongful Convictions).
  • Teaching core curriculum courses such as Research Methods, Learning, and Cognitive Psychology.
  • Teaching core graduate-level psychology courses, as well as ones in candidate’s area(s) of expertise.
  • Engaging in scholarly research in areas of expertise and disseminating findings through peer-reviewed publications and academic presentations.
  • Supervising graduate and undergraduate student research and advising graduate students in the MS experimental program.


RESEARCH & LABORATORY RESOURCES:

Research areas of interest include juror/legal decision-making, eyewitness memory, confessions, social cognition in legal settings, and misinformation.

The Psychology Program offers laboratory space to support faculty and student research in psychology and law, including:

  • Rooms with one-way mirrors
  • Conference rooms
  • Computer lab


INTERDISCIPLINARY COLABORATIONS:

Emporia State recently reorganized academic units to enhance academic excellence and provide opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. The Psychology Program regularly collaborates with Sociology, Criminology, Forensic Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Studies. Recent and ongoing collaborations include:

  • Coauthored conference presentations with psychology and sociology faculty
  • Contribution of the Legal Psychology course to the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies’ major in Social Change
  • Legal Psychology and Forensic Psychology courses that attract students from Applied Sociology, Applied Criminology, Education, and Forensic Science majors


COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

  • We are eager to cultivate community partnerships to enhance our program and provide unique opportunities for our students. These partnerships could include:
  • Engagement with local courts (e.g., drug courts, behavioral health courts) for student internships and experiential learning opportunities.
  • Partnering with local nonprofit organizations that serve individuals navigating the legal system (e.g., violence shelter, runaway/homeless youth shelter, community mental health center).
  • Collaboration with Washburn University’s 3+3 law program, allowing our students to transition into law school while completing their undergraduate studies in psychology.

 

GRADUATE PROGRAMS:

  • The candidate in this position would also contribute to one or more of ESU’s M.S. programs, particularly in Experimental Psychology and Clinical Psychology.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. in Psychology with specialization in Legal Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Psychology and Law, or similar field. ABD will be considered if you are finishing within the 25-26 academic year.
  • Evidence of successful teaching at the undergraduate level. 

COMPENSATION:

  • Salary: $53,000 - $56,000  annually
  • Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
