Emporia State University (ESU) seeks applications or nominations for the Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS). The Dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the division, which includes undergraduate programs in Applied Criminology, Applied Sociology, Communication, History and Government, English Teaching Field, Spanish Teaching Field, Social Sciences Teaching Field, Speech and Theatre Teaching Field, Languages, Literary Studies and Writing, and a graduate program in Applied Sociology at the master’s level.

 

Programs within HSS fulfill the University’s mission of “preparing students for lifelong learning, rewarding careers, and adaptive leadership” and have a history of providing exceptional high-impact learning experiences.

 

The Dean will work closely with associate and assistant deans, faculty, and staff to continue to develop a comprehensive strategic vision for the college, deepen the school’s community engagement, advance initiatives to engage and recruit students to the University and to the school’s programs, and continue the success of HSS in developing first-rate professionals and well-rounded citizens for the region and state.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serves as the principal academic and administrative officer of HSS.
  • Strategically plans and ensures the overall effective operation of all programs within HSS.
  • Maintains fiscal responsibility for all personnel and operating budgets within HSS.
  • Provides leadership in the development and maintenance of academic excellence in all disciplines through all program delivery systems.
  • Effectively represents and advocates for the programs, faculty, staff, and students within HSS to the University community and external constituents.
  • Supervises and annually evaluates personnel within HSS.
  • Provides leadership in faculty recruitment, promotion, and tenure.                                                     
  • Provides support and leadership for accreditation reviews within academic programs.
  • Demonstrates and promotes collaborative efforts with other schools/colleges within ESU and with external constituents.
  • Pursues active membership on state and national professional committees which promote visibility for HSS and ESU.
  • Adheres to State, Board of Regents, and University policies and ensures HSS personnel do the same.
  • Carries out tasks assigned by the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs and the President of ESU.
  • Participates in fundraising initiatives that impact HSS and ESU in collaboration with personnel from the ESU Foundation.
  • Ensures that student learning outcome assessment plans are annually implemented, reviewed, and revised (as appropriate) for each academic program offered within HSS.
  • Supports ESU and HSS outreach initiatives to attract a diverse student body and increase student enrollment and retention.
  • Leads a vibrant and inclusive culture of student and faculty learning within HSS.
  • Monitors the physical facilities within HSS to ensure they are appropriately maintained and state-of-the-art.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned terminal degree from an accredited institution in a related discipline within the humanities and social sciences.
  • Record as an accomplished academic administrator.
  • Demonstrated record in teaching, service, and research at the level of Associate Professor or above.
  • Experience with shared governance in academics, budgeting, and personnel issues.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with faculty, students, alumni, and administrators.
  • Evidence of excellent human relations, leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.


Desirable Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three years’ experience as dean, associate dean, department chair, or equivalent administrative roles.
  • Familiarity with programmatic accreditation and regulatory compliance set forth by accrediting agencies.
  • Experience with building partnerships between academic programs and external entities.
  • Experience with fundraising and donor/alumni relations.

COMPENSATION:

  • Salary: $101,000 - $167,199 annually
  • Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
