Department of Residential Life at Emporia State University is seeking applicants for the Student Success Coach (SSC) position. The Department of Residential Life strives to support the academic mission of Emporia State University by providing residents with assistance, connections, and opportunities to enhance their experience at ESU.


The department is committed to the celebration of diversity, community safety, and student development. As a member of the Residential Life Team at Emporia State University, the SSC will promote and activate the mission, vision, and values of the department.


Reporting to the Assistant Director of Residential Life, the SSC plays an integral role in enhancing student success and the overall experience of residents in assigned residential communities. Ideal candidates should be student-focused and have the ability to establish relationships, implement training and accountability, communicate effectively, and oversee student success initiatives with excellent attention to detail.


This is a 12-month, live-on position, and includes night and weekend responsibilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Student Engagement: Contribute to initiatives of the residential curriculum for assigned residential communities, which includes individualized and community support, social and educational experiences, and connections to campus, to optimize resident experiences and increase retention. Create welcoming experiences and spaces that foster open communication and trust. Develop and facilitate workshops and seminars on topics such as study skills, dimensions of wellness, and career planning. Encourage student participation in campus activities, clubs, and organizations to enhance their college experience. (20%)
  • Coaching & Mentoring: Provide coaching sessions to help students set academic goals and develop personalized action plans. Assist students in identifying their strengths and areas for improvement in their performance. Offer strategies for effective study habits, time management, exam preparation, conflict resolution, and productive community behaviors. (20%)
  • Problem Solving & Crisis Manage: Serve as a member of an on-call duty rotation during nights and weekends. Utilize critical thinking to assess and execute response procedures, while adapting where needed. Provide initial crisis management and resources for students as needed. Refer students to, and consult with, appropriate agencies within the Emporia State community in a timely fashion. Provide debriefing and restorative follow-up for students and appropriate communities. Complete appropriate documentation processes. Contribute to the review, maintenance, and additions to crisis response plans. Uphold FERPA, Title IX and Clery guidelines and expectations. (20%)
  • Resource Navigation: Assist students in accessing campus resources, including academic support services, mental health resources, basic needs resources, financial processes and tutoring programs. Provide information about academic policies, degree requirements, and registration processes. Connect students with appropriate support services based on their individual needs. (15%)
  • Monitoring Progress: Track student progress and engagement, providing timely feedback and intervention when necessary. Collaborate with faculty and staff to identify at-risk students and develop strategies for support. Maintain accurate records of coaching sessions and student interactions. (10%)
  • Departmental and Division Initiatives: Provide professionalism and support for the Residential Life team. Facilitate training for student staff. Work with the Residential Life team on departmental initiatives such as recruitment, retention, move-in, move-out, and summer conferences. Collaborate with external stakeholders on behalf of Residential Life. Other duties as assigned. (15%)

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus at least one year of experience.
  • Ability to create spaces and relationships that support diverse student populations.
  • Ability to serve on a 24/7 on-call duty rotation and respond to campus within 10 minutes. On-call weekend duty will typically occur every 5-7 weeks. On-call weekday duty will typically occur one night a week.
  • Capability to work a flexible schedule, including work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to perform each essential duty mentioned below satisfactorily.


 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Student Affairs, Education, or a related field.
  • Previous experience with college housing, case management, crisis response, and student development theory.


COMPENSATION:

  • Salary:  $43,403.00
