Emporia State University’s School of Humanities & Social Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track nine-month, Assistant Professor position, specializing in Philosophy and English, to begin in August 2025.
Our Social Sciences and English programs prize teaching and collaboration. Faculty members in these programs promote opportunities for students to put their skills into practice through community engagement and other high-impact learning experiences. The programs strongly encourage efforts promoting inclusive and equitable pedagogy and research. We welcome candidates who will contribute to and strengthen these efforts.
This position may be offered as a tenure-track, multi-year contract (non-tenure track up to three years), or non-tenure-track appointment, with consideration of factors including, but not limited to, academic program needs, the authority of Emporia State University, the qualifications of candidates, and consideration of the interests of candidates.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The School of Humanities & Social Sciences offers undergraduate majors in both English and History and Government, as well as minors in English, Philosophy, Political Science, History, Creative Writing, and Integrated Media Studies.
- Courses in our programs support robust education programs in English and Social Sciences, as well as large programs on campus in Nursing, Sciences, and Business.
- We seek applicants who can contribute courses in Philosophy that support our programs as well as the university’s General Education program. In addition to Philosophy, the candidate should contribute courses to English in the areas of Composition/Rhetoric, Literature, or Digital Humanities.
- The successful applicant will be expected to teach General Education offerings in Philosophy and English, program foundations courses, and upper-level capstone and theory courses.
- The normal teaching load for this position is twelve hours per semester, and other relevant duties, including maintaining appropriate levels of research and participating in school and university service. Excellent teaching skills and a commitment to student recruitment, retention, and engagement are required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Qualifications:
- Must hold terminal degree in one of the required areas plus, at minimum, a Master’s degree in the other: Ph.D. in Philosophy with minimum Master’s degree in an area of English, or Ph.D. or terminal degree in an area English with minimum Master’s degree in Philosophy.
- ABD considered.
COMPENSATION:
- Salary: $52,094 - $56,000 annually
- Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
