University Libraries and Archives (ULA) at Emporia State University in Emporia, KS seeks applications for one tenure track OR multi-year appointment. This position may be offered as a tenure-track, multi-year contract (non-tenure track up to three years), or non-tenure-track appointment, with consideration of factors including, but not limited to, ULA needs, the authority of Emporia State University, the qualifications of candidates, and consideration of the interests of candidates.


The Academic Engagement and User Experience Librarian is responsible for fostering deep learning and interaction with University Libraries & Archives (ULA) resources by teaching information literacy and partnering with faculty to integrate library services into the curriculum and student activities. This position conducts embedded library instruction using innovative strategies and high-impact educational practices to connect students and faculty to resources. As a faculty member, this position will contribute to the field of library science, conduct research on student experience, and promote initiatives that innovate public services in academic libraries.



As the head of public services, this position is responsible for transforming the William Allen White Library into a vibrant hub for student success and achievement. This position will be responsible for developing creative programming and meaningful engagement strategies to connect students and faculty with the library’s valuable information resources, thereby improving the overall academic and student experience. This is an in-person position that requires a flexible schedule during standard library operating hours, facilitating events, and managing part-time student library workers. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teaches information literacy and critical thinking skills in credit-bearing courses, including UL100, UL121, UL242, UL742, and UL745. These courses serve as an introduction to the concepts and skills needed to locate, evaluate and use information in a manner that contributes to academic, professional, and civic success. Teaches subject-specific library instruction sessions, workshops, and research guides in undergraduate and graduates courses connected with the library’s resources. Engages students in one-on-one instruction sessions for research and information retrieval.
  • Oversees library public services to enhance the user experience, including circulation, user engagement, programming, reference services, and maintenance of the physical collection. Provides leadership to enhance the user experience by promoting excellent customer service, resolving issues, developing and implementing policies, and ensuring a safe environment. Supervises undergraduate and graduate library assistants in their respective roles.
  • Develops and implements creative events and programming that offer high-impact student engagement opportunities and promote the ULA’s resources and services. 
  • Collaborates with the ULA faculty and other teaching faculty to evaluate and develop library collections in a variety of formats to meet student learning and curricular needs. 
  • Engages in pertinent ongoing service by serving on ULA and university committees and task forces, as assigned. Engages in research, scholarship, and/or creative activity as related to functions of the job, mission of the ULA, and of Emporia State.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library science
  • Demonstrated skills in oral and written communication, including interpersonal skills and a collaborative and creative approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to take initiative, work both independently and collaboratively, handle multiple tasks, set priorities, and complete tasks in a timely manner.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years teaching experience, 2+ years' experience in managing library public services.
  • Experience in/knowledge of current practices, principles, and trends in instructional design and technologies, academic research and scholarship, and the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Information Literacy framework. 

COMPENSATION:

  • Salary:  $50,281.00 annually
  • Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
