Safety Officer and Building Manager

The School of Science and Mathematics at Emporia State University seeks an individual to serve as the full-time Safety Officer and Building Manager beginning August 2024.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversight of laboratory safety for all faculty, staff, and students in the School of Science and Mathematics. These responsibilities will include developing/updating policies regarding laboratory safety including a laboratory hygiene plan and providing relevant safety training for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Monitoring laboratories to ensure that safe practices are being used, safety equipment is functional and reporting issues of non-compliance.
  • Create and maintain a chemical inventory, facilitate ordering of chemicals, ensure that Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are available for the current inventory of chemicals.
  • Coordinate with the campus Environmental Safety Director to manage hazardous waste disposal.
  • Submit facilities requests for renovations and repairs to improve safety compliance, serve as the point of contact with facilities staff for all renovation, and facilitate decisions for all building projects. 
  • Perform or schedule maintenance of standard laboratory equipment (e.g. hoods, water purification, autoclaves, refrigeration, microscopes, pipettes)

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum requirements:

  • B.S. in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, environmental science, or a closely related field is expected by the start date. 
  • At least 5 years of experience with laboratory safety, laboratory chemical hygiene plans, hazardous waste storage and disposal, and chemical inventories


Preferred:

  • Completion of EPA Hazardous Waste Generators training (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)) and OSHA HAZWOPER training
  • Biosafety certification from AIBS or CDC
  • Experience with standard laboratory instrumentation
  • Experience providing training and oversight of laboratory safety
  • Experience with managing remodel and renovation projects 

COMPENSATION:

  • Salary:  $24.04 - $28.85 hourly
  • Qualifications and previous experience will be considered for placement of base rank and salary.
